The Steele Family: Mackenzie's Mishap

We have been busy in Rochester getting to know our new city. I haven't even posted much about our move, but we are enjoying it here. We are finding that it's a really great place for families. Eric has been busy at work, and I have been lucky enough to stay home with the kids. Mackenzie goes to preschool 3 days a week and has swimming lessons. Nolan has been going to a hop n tots gym class every week, and Evan is just pretty much attached to my hip.

Mackenzie has been working hard to make some new friends and has been enjoying the 4 kids that live across the street from Uncle Steve's house. 3 of the kids are older and that tends to get Macky into some trouble since she always tries to do what they do. Eric caught her trying to climb a tree on Saturday and he told her not to do it again. Well yesterday (Sunday) she was up in the tree again. She was across the street and we were in the front yard. We saw her fall, but she really was not very high. She started crying so I went over to her. Her elbow looked pretty gross. It was popped out a bit and her arm was already swelling.

I walked her back over to the house and Eric took one look at her and decided he better bring her in to the ER. I stayed home with the boys and pretty much went stir crazy waiting for news from Eric. He was really good about keeping me informed as much as he could and as fast as he could.

They had to sedate her a bit for X-rays and said before they even did them that they thought 99% sure it was broken. She couldn't move it in any direction once she got there. After they read the scans they found a 3mm break of separation and a partial bone chip in her humerus right at the elbow along a growth plate. Being the break occurred on a growth plate and there was a chip, she will be having surgery tomorrow morning to repair it. They said it's about a 2 hour surgery and they will put 2-3 pins in that will come out after 4-6 weeks. We shouldn't have to do physical therapy and the doctor said that the best thing for her will be swimming after the cast comes off. She was pretty excited about that part! One plus about living here is that we get to have a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in growth plates do the surgery without traveling anywhere.

We'll be heading to the hospital at about 5:45 tomorrow morning. Wish us luck and say some extra prayers for our little peanut (Macky, Mackavelli, Mack, Peanut Butter) Mackenzie!

Mackenzie won't be trying any of these stunts for quite a while. If anyone has any good indoor or outdoor activities for a 5 year old who broke her writing arm please pass them my way!
